Medical Payments Coverage

Ask yourself these questions to determine if you need this coverage and if so, how much?

Q. Is the Medical Payment benefit mandatory in Colorado?

A. No, however, many consumers are choosing this protection which is offered in varied amounts per person from $500 to $25,000 or more with some companies.

Q. If I have medical benefits through my employer or through an individual health plan, do I need to take this coverage?

A. While not mandatory, it may be a good idea to purchase some medical payment benefits to cover the potential claims that may not be included in your health plan. Chiropractic care is often associated with auto injuries, yet some health plans limit or exclude this type of treatment.

Q. Can the medical payment amount I choose be used to meet the deductible on my health plan?

A. Medical Payment Benefits normally become the primary coverage in an auto accident. Therefore, you may use this benefit to meet any deductible that might apply. Be sure to check with your employer provided or individual health plan to confirm how they pay claims related to auto accidents. Some plans may limit the amount paid in an automobile related claim.

Q. What if the other driver is found to be at fault for the accident?

A. In our tort environment, the at fault party is legally liable for the property damage and personal injury caused by their negligence. If they are found negligent, both your auto insurance carrier and your health insurance company may be reimbursed for expenses paid on your behalf.

It is important to read your insurance policies for a full understanding of this and other coverage and benefits. This is a general summary only, not legal wording.
